Another type of rare earth magnet is hollow cylindrical samarium cobalt magnets. It is frequently used in the aerospace, automotive, and military industries. At room temperature, it is often weaker than NdFeB. Samarium cobalt may be used in both cold and hot conditions. It also has a very high coercivity, thereby rendering it perfect for high-temperature motor applications.
Samarium cobalt magnets are available in two alloy varieties: Sm1Co5 (SmCo1:5), the original SmCo alloy, and Sm2Co17 (SmCo2:17), the more regularly used and stronger SmCo alloy, of which SmCo26 is the most popular. Because Sm1Co5 is mostly composed of Sm and Co and lacks iron (Fe), it has good corrosion resistance. Sm2Co17 is mostly composed of Sm and Co, although it also contains Cu, Hf, and/or Zr.and, on occasion, Pr and Fe. Because of its low free iron concentration, Sm2Co17 is technically vulnerable to mild surface corrosion when exposed to water. In most applications, Sm2Co17 is believed to have good to very good corrosion resistance (far better than NdFeB), and a simple NiCuNi coating will most likely eliminate any corrosion risk issues.
