U Channel Magnet Linear Motor
Short Description:
The U-channel motor offers benefits and drawbacks that the designer must take into account when choosing a motor, just like the iron core motor. Depending on the available space, this motor type can be positioned either vertically or horizontally and normally has a rectangular shape. To fit in places with a restricted amount of height, the motor may have a low, flat design. The U-channel motor type’s lack of cogging is another benefit. There are a few drawbacks to the U-channel motor, as there are with everything.
In order to have a direct drive linear motor without some of the behaviors of the iron core type motors, U-Channel motors were created. The absence of iron from the motor's crucial areas is one of its primary characteristics. This gets rid of cogging and the non-linear force-current relationship brought on by magnetic saturation. A second set of permanent magnets in a double-sided arrangement has been added to the motor to improve the amount of force it can produce. Additionally, the non-ferrous forcer plate, which is normally constructed of aluminum, has electromagnetic coils affixed to it using epoxy.

Two parallel magnet tracks with the force between the plates are facing each other in U-channel linear motors. A bearing system supports the forcer in the magnet track. Because the forcers are ironless, no attractive or disruptive forces are produced between the forcer and magnet track. Because the ironless coil assembly has a low mass, it may accelerate very quickly.
The coil winding is typically three-phase and uses brushless commutation. The engine can be given additional air cooling, and there are even water-cooled variants available, to increase performance. Because the magnets are arranged in a U-shaped channel and face one another, this design is better suited to minimizing magnetic flux leakage. Additionally, the layout reduces the possibility of harm from the strong magnetic attraction.
The length of the cable management system, the available encoder length, and the capacity to make large, flat structures are the only factors limiting the operational length of the magnet tracks, which can be combined to enhance the length of trip.
